Any field related to “diet” greatly affects various aspects of human “health and nutrition.”  In the Major in Food Science, which is based on natural sciences and incorporates perspectives of arts and social sciences, we offer an educational system that deals with a broad range of food issues, allowing students to take a variety of contents which our modern society faces.  Our comprehensive study areas include the relationship between diet and culture, food systems, safety in the food industry, and creating hospitality through food.

There are many food-related issues around us, (e.g.) flood of food information caused by the mass media, an increase in imported foodstuffs, and environmental and safety issues.  As choices of food are so diverse, consumers experience difficulties in selecting what to eat.  They are also becoming highly conscious of food safety.  We need dietitians with abundant skills and knowledge who can provide good advice from the consumer’s point of view.  In the Major in Food Science, we aim to develop “food specialists” required by the service industry including consumer centers, hotels, restaurants, department stores and supermarkets.  Food specialists comprehensively manage safe, high-quality “diets” for people by making most of their deep knowledge of food, nutrition and food culture.  We believe that the knowledge students obtain in the four years with us will definitely be useful for improving their own lifestyle as well as that of their families.  It is our hope to send students out to the world who will contribute to the improvement of the Japanese diet through involvement in the food industry and other new business opportunities.

* The qualifications for the national examinations for a dietitian, registered or not, cannot be obtained in the Major in Food Science.
